Cup: Ajax - P.S.V. 2-0
Ajax actually lost in the round of 16, 2-1 away to A.Z. '67. Since by that stage only 14 teams actually were in the competition, one of the 7 defeated teams was drawn into the quarterfinal. Ajax won that draw and responded by winning the Cup. The rule, which had been in use for some years due to the K.N.V.B. policy of only admitting professional teams, was immediately abolished.
PSV Eindhoven had every right to object to the lost final – every right, except for what happened on the pitch. The team was not yet the strong formation, which pleased crowds in the 1970s. Lucky to reach the final and finishing with a double. Ajax was coming!
