Mexico 1970

Mexico 1970.

Extraordinary Tournament

Due to celebration in Mexico of the IX World Championship, the Mexican FA decided to play this special tournament
in two phases (before and after of the World Cup)

16 teams were seeded in two groups of 8 teams each one, first four places of each group advanced to "Championship Group"
and the last four teams of each group played in "Consolation Group".

Originally, Laguna (last place of the 1969-70 season) had to play against the last place of the Consolation Group in a
playoff relegation series, however for expansion to 18 teams for the 1970-71 season this series was cancelled, so there was no relegation
This tournament is counted as championship league

Mexico 1969-70

Mexico. Because of the World Cup there were 2 championships instead of one in 1970: the first was the regular 1969-70 season, started on April 9, 1969 and finished on January 4, 1970 (with the play-off for second place; the regular season ended on December 23, 1969). After that a special championship, celebrating the World Cup, was scheduled: it was to be played in two parts – the first before the World Cup and the second after. It was called 'Mexico 1970' and at first seemed to be just special unofficial tournament, but eventually was decided to be counted as regular state championship with additional new adjustments. Mexico 1970 was started on February 4, 1970, stopped on May 6, continued after the Wordl Cup on July 8 and finished on October 7, 1970. And after that at the end of November the normal 1970-71 championship started. Meantime the Mexican Federation decided to expand the First Division from 16 to 18 teams and rules for relegation were changed.
