European Champions Cup

European Champions Cup. Bits of trivia: Bayern was eliminated in the first round by Saint Etienne (2-0 and 0-3), Real Madrid went out in the second round, beaten twice by Standard Liege (0-1 and 2-3), away goals counted, but no penalty shoot-outs after extra time – sometimes a playoff was played on neutral venue; sometimes a coin toss. A coin toss broke equality and two teams benefited by sheer gambler's luck: the coin decided in favour of Celtic (against Benfica after 3-0 and 0-3), and Galatasaray (against Spartak Trnava, 0-1 and 1-0) in the second round. It was still normal poor small clubs agreeing to play home leg away in order to save money – thus KR Reykjavik played both legs against Feyenoord in Rotterdam and Olympiakos Nicosia in Madrid against Real.

Celtic was unable to win a second European cup – to a point, this final was the end of the greatest vintage of the club.

The real international arrival of the Dutch was due not to Ajax and Cruijff, but to their rivals. Ajax failed to win the European Champions Cup final in 1970 and thus was seen to a point just an anomaly. Feyenoord proved that Dutch football was pushing its way to the top.

Proud winners, still called Feijenoord. Hardly anonimous players, but not yet the well-known names around the world. The Dutch were coming to rule the 1970s.
