Debut. In 1971 a tall and strong forward debuted at the right wing of Ajax – the 20-years old John Nicholaas Rep.

The world almost immediately learned his name – Johnny Rep. One of the quickly established players – from unknown reserve to superstar in a single season. With him the 'canonical' Ajax was completed. Rep was a bit unlucky, for he was a center-forward, but there was Cruijff... and free spot at the right wing, so he started as a right-winger. No matter – the concept of total football did not follow nominal positions and and the rest is history.
