Inter-cities Fairs Cup

Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Trivia: the second leg between Aris (Thesaloniki) and Cagliari in the first round was abandoned in the 76th minute. Cagliari was leading 3-0 and the result stood. Ajax (Amsterdam) reached the semi-final, where was eliminated by Arsenal 0-3 and 1-0. In the previous year Ajax played at the European Champions Cup final, now reached the semi-finals – Ajax was coming!

Anderlecht had a great run to the final – they eliminated Valur Reykjavik 6-0 and 2-0, Coleraine 6-1 and 7-3, Dunfermline Athletic 1-0 and 2-3, Newcastle United 2-0 and 1-3, and Inter (Milano) 0-1 and 2-0. They lost to Arsenal only by one goal. Although international success will come in the second half of the 1970s, Anderlecht was strong and well respected club during the 1960s – too bad they were unable to win this time.

Perhaps it was just about time for Arsenal to win international trophy – this squad was at its peak.

Cup Winners Cup

Cup Winners Cup. AS Roma was the curiosity of the tournament – they advanced on coin toss and they were eliminated on coin toss. Benefited by the coin against PSV Eindhoven in the second round (1-0 and 0-1), but in the semi-finals the coin favoured their opponents, Gornik (Zabrze). The teams met three times: 1-1, 2-2, then playoff in Strasbourg (France), which also ended 1-1 after overtime. The coin propelled Gornik to the final.

Happy winners.

Gornik (Zabrze) lost minimally, but to this very day remains the only Polish squad reaching European club final. The photo is not from the final; it is from the dramatic semi-final. The squad was strong, perhaps one of the all-time best teams of Gornik, full of national team players (including the reserve goalkeeper Jan Gomola) and two players will be outstanding during the 1970 – Wlodzimierz Lubanski and Jerzy Gorgon. This explains why Gornik reached the final, yet, the road was not easy and rather lucky: in the first two rounds – no problems: they eliminated Olympiakos (Piraeus) 2-2 and 5-0, then Glasgow Rangers 3-1 and 3-1. Elimination of Levski-Spartak (Sofia) was difficult: 2-3 in Sofia and 2-1 in Zabrze, away goals saved their skins in the quarter-finals. The semi-fnal was the big drama: 3 games plus overtime and no winner: 1-1, 2-2, and 1-1 after overtime in the third match in Strasbourg against AS Roma. And then the referee tossed the coin and Gornik won by sheer gambler's luck. At the final the boys did their best in the second half, but were unable to equalize and lost. Great echievement, but no Cup...

Manchester City won their first European trophy with their striped kit – a reserve kit, used perhaps supersticiously: they won the FA Cup with it as well. Since the photo has nothing to do with the Cup Winners Cup final it is used here only to point at the colours.

Manchester City won the Cup Winners Cup.

European Champions Cup

European Champions Cup. Bits of trivia: Bayern was eliminated in the first round by Saint Etienne (2-0 and 0-3), Real Madrid went out in the second round, beaten twice by Standard Liege (0-1 and 2-3), away goals counted, but no penalty shoot-outs after extra time – sometimes a playoff was played on neutral venue; sometimes a coin toss. A coin toss broke equality and two teams benefited by sheer gambler's luck: the coin decided in favour of Celtic (against Benfica after 3-0 and 0-3), and Galatasaray (against Spartak Trnava, 0-1 and 1-0) in the second round. It was still normal poor small clubs agreeing to play home leg away in order to save money – thus KR Reykjavik played both legs against Feyenoord in Rotterdam and Olympiakos Nicosia in Madrid against Real.

Celtic was unable to win a second European cup – to a point, this final was the end of the greatest vintage of the club.

The real international arrival of the Dutch was due not to Ajax and Cruijff, but to their rivals. Ajax failed to win the European Champions Cup final in 1970 and thus was seen to a point just an anomaly. Feyenoord proved that Dutch football was pushing its way to the top.

Proud winners, still called Feijenoord. Hardly anonimous players, but not yet the well-known names around the world. The Dutch were coming to rule the 1970s.

USA

USA. 1970 ASL II: Philadelphia Ukrainians won. American Soccer League It was the other US professional football league. Since the US various league were not united and some were not even members of FIFA, the country practically had no national championship. NASL was emerging as the most prestigious championship, but in it's 3rd season it was not only very small, but hardly the lucrative of the 1970s. It was hardly noticed in North Amdrica and practically unknown outside. Rules were strange, players were predominantly foreign-born and it was almost impossible to distinguish genuine imports from naturalized players: since there were no famous names, naturalized players were addvertised as foreigners hoping to present to the general public a picture of league made from 'the world's best'. Since soccer was something strange and unknown to the general population, anonimous players and more famous imports meant exactly nothing to the potential customers. Overview Six teams competed with the Rochester Lancers winning the championship. Santos FC of Brazil beat the NASL All-Stars 4–3 at Soldier Field in Chicago to finish the season. In 1970, NASL teams rounded out their schedules by playing an assortment of foreign clubs including Hapoel Petah Tikva, Varzim, Hertha Berlin and Coventry City. These games weren't just for attendance but also counted in the standings. The Washington Darts went 2-2-0 versus the international teams earning the "International Cup".
