With this season started the greatest period in the history of the club – so far, Borussia had only one trophy: they won the German Cup in 1960. Along with Bayern (Munich), they were not among the original members of the Bundesliga, but after earning promotion (again along with Bayern) they quickly moved up until reacing the top in this season – first time (West) German champions and the winners, unlike some of the previous champions, did not look an accidental victors. The team was here to stay, having a great coach – Hennes Weisweiler – and bulk of players, soon to be world famous: Netzer, Vogts, Wimmer. One of the teams defining the 1970s has arrived.
